I-85 Northbound Interstate Caught On Fire And Collapsed

(via AJC)

Thursday (March 30), a section of I-85 randomly collapsed. It took officials nearly an hour to put the fire out but luckily no one was hurt.

According to reports, the exact cause of the fire is unknown but 3 suspects have since been taken into custody. Apparently, the suspects used plastic materials that were left under that section of the interstate.

However, some believe the PVC piping under the interstate may have been the cause of the fire.

It seem officials may be attempting to cover themselves so they won’t be blamed for the fire, or perhaps the 3 suspects really did start a fire. At this point, the story is still developing. You can probably expect more information about the fire to come out within the next few weeks.

In the meantime, it is being said that it may take months before the highway is restored. This isn’t great news for commuters, especially since Atlanta’s traffic is already pretty ridiculous.

The Georgia Department of Transportation released a map for alternative routes below.
