[WATCH] Denzel Washington’s Thoughts On ‘Fake News’

(via independent.co.uk/)

There’s a video circulating around of Denzel Washington speaking with a reporter while at the premiere of his new movie Fences. On the video, Washington speaks his mind on the rise of ‘Fake News’ and how the media buys into it:

“What is the long term effect of too much information? One of the effects is the need to be first, not even to be true anymore. So what is the responsibility you all have? To tell the truth, not to just be first, but to tell the truth. We live in a society now where it’s just first. Who cares? Get it out there. We don’t care who it hurts, we don’t care who we destroy, we don’t care if it’s true. Just say it, sell it”, he said.

The points made by Washington are very valid and true. It seems almost every media outlet has turned more into a rumor mill and less of a supplier of real informed information. Journalistic integrity doesn’t really seem to be a thing anymore. In the words of Denzel: “If you don’t read the newspaper you uninformed, if you do read it you’re misinformed.” So how do we put integrity back into the media? How do we filter out the rumors, fake news, and unnecessary bluff? Washington definitely called the media out, hopefully he woke some of them up.
